We in the WPS community got a glimpse behind the curtain in week 3. The magicJack play their first game and come out with a win versus the Breakers, something they failed to do in two seasons as the Freedom. And the Flash meet last week’s WPS POTW Alli Lipsher and the Beat for their second game of the season.

  • What interested you most about the magicJack’s debut?
  • Was the win indicative that the move to FL was right for the team?

At the end of week 2 of the 2011 WPS season, we thought all teams would have a game under their belt and MagicJack’s mysteries would be revealed. (As MagicJack is still without a website and had their opening game postponed, we will have to wait another week before discussing their on-field performance.) This week’s chat will re-cap the games from week 2 and discuss the first winner of the WPS POTW award.

Q1: Sky Blue vs. the Beat.

  • What are your thoughts on the Beat’s defense “tale of two games” (letting in 4 goals to not conceding a goal)?
  • Was Sky Blue’s performance indicative of things to come and what might that be?
  • Who is your player of the match?

For more information on the match, check out the box scoreSky Blue recap, and Atlanta recap.

Q2: The Flash vs. The Breakers.

The start of the 2011 WPS season is right around the corner and your friends at Pitch Side View and Our Game Magazine are once again teaming up to deliver a special #WPSchat. This week we will look at and discuss the player experience as describe in the April issue: what it takes to bounce back from an injury, development of players at every level (skills and tactically), and the sacrifices they have made to do what they love.

Q1: Player Injuries.

  • Which is tougher to overcome after an injury, the physical rehab or the mental rehab?
  • Is there a player from last season that recovered particularly well from injury?
  • What importance does the supporting cast have in a player’s rehab?
  • What is importance of setting goals and reaching them?

For more information see the article Mental Toughness (pages 22-26) by Manya Makoski.

Q2: Player Development.

  • What is the difference in skills development vs. tactical development?
  • Does tactical development help players who may be less physically gifted to be great players?
  • What importance does player development have in the growth of the sport?

For more information see the article Player Development Revolution (pages 18-19) by Anthony DiCicco.

Q3: The Sacrifices.

  • What is to be said of the players who have given up other professional careers to play in the WPS?

For more information see the article Hidden Talents (pages 36-39) by Ciara McCormack.
